Adventurous Trek from Rifugio Vandelli to Rifugio San Marco

Today marked the most challenging day of our hike, filled with unexpected twists and heart-pounding moments. We set out at 06:40, eager to conquer the rugged terrain ahead. After 45 minutes of steady hike, we finally reached the trailhead to the via ferrata, a thrilling ascent that promised both adventure and exhilaration.

The Via Ferrata Challenge

As we navigated the via ferrata, the excitement was palpable. However, the tranquility of the morning was soon interrupted by ominous clouds rolling in. Realizing the urgency, we quickened our pace, determined to complete the climb before the storm hit. The ascent took us two grueling hours, and just as we reached the summit, the sky unleashed its fury. Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed, sending a jolt of fear through our group.

Decision Time

We paused to secure our packs with waterproof covers, our hearts racing as we debated our next move. Should we seek shelter or press on? The risk of lightning strikes loomed large, especially with Mike instinctively taking cover under a bush at the first sound of thunder. Despite the frightening circumstances, we decided to continue our trek, driven by the desire to reach our destination.
The Descent into the Storm
As we descended, the rain began to pour, chilling us to the bone. My legs felt like jello, fatigue setting in as the mental battle to keep going intensified. I worried about missing dinner and the possibility of hiking in the dark, a daunting thought that pushed me to keep moving forward.
The Long Journey

For over ten hours, we trudged through the relentless rain, each step a testament to our determination. The trail was treacherous, but the camaraderie among us provided the strength to persevere. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we arrived at Rifugio San Marco at 1715, our sanctuary after a day filled with adventure, fear, and the sheer will to conquer nature’s challenges.

Though drenched and exhausted, we celebrated our triumph, grateful for the experience that tested our limits and brought us closer together. This day would forever be etched in our memories as the true essence of adventure.
